Democrats welcome new ABC Managing Director

Australian Democrats’ Broadcasting spokesperson, Senator Vicki Bourne, today welcomed the appointment of Mr Russell Balding to the position of Managing Director of the ABC.

Senator Bourne said, “Mr Balding comes to the position at a critical time in the ABC’s history. The ABC has suffered greatly in recent years and is in the midst of a vital healing process.

“As Acting Managing Director for the past six months, Mr Balding has overseen the ABC’s recovery as an institution and an accompanying growth in ratings.

“It is heartening that the ABC Board has seen fit to appoint a person with direct experience of the operations and culture of the ABC. A familiarity with and a commitment to public broadcasting have obviously been valued in making this appointment.

“I believe Mr Balding understands the vast importance of the ABC as an Australian cultural institution.

“The Democrats congratulate Mr Balding and wish him all the best in his new role,” concluded Senator Bourne.
