Gulf crisis: Treasurer's non-appearance at the Gulf Cabinet meeting

PRU GOWARD: Well, some may be sanguine about Paul Keating's non-appearance yesterday, but a final comment this morning on the Deputy Prime Minister's non-attendance from another Adelaide Federal backbencher - a very angry John Scott has had this to say to Daybreak.

JOHN SCOTT: How can any one consider Keating to be a serious leadership contender when he did not attend the special Cabinet meeting on the Gulf crisis? If Keating's not interested in the Gulf debate, I'm sure most of the backbench would have been prepared to take his place in this crucial Cabinet meeting. I certainly would have grabbed such an opportunity. Certainly, the community of Australia was very concerned about the issue and one would have thought that the Deputy Leader would have been concerned enough to attend.
