MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Peter Garrett AM MP Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts

The Hon Joel Fitzgibbon MP Member for Hunter

13 May 2009

Volunteer organisations that help protect and conserve Australia’s unique environment and heritage have received almost $1.5 million in Federal Government grants − doubling the amount received in the 2007−08 round.

Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon, said that the Australian Government’s program Grants to Voluntary Environment and Heritage Organisations (GVEHO) program would benefit 3 environment and heritage organisations in Hunter.

Cessnock District Historical and Family History Society will receive $1,500, Richmond Vale Preservation Co-operative Society will receive $3,600 and the Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles Inc. will receive $15,000.

“This year, the Federal Government more than doubled the funding available under the program, benefiting 184 environment and 65 heritage organisations nationally.”

“The funds are provided for administration costs to ensure that groups can use more of their budget to achieve their aims of conserving and protecting Australia's natural environment and historic heritage,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said the funds were especially important in tough economic times.

“The Rudd Government knows that especially in this difficult times we need to support the vital work of volunteer organisations, who are working to protect some of Australia’s greatest assets − our unique environment and heritage, and ultimately this is in every Australian’s best

interest,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

A list of successful applicants for the 2008−09 GVEHO program are available at the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website:, by email or by telephone 02 6274 2422.
