The Australian Greens today congratulated the Larrakia people of the Northern Territory, following the

announcement of an agreement over 65,000 hectares on the Cox Peninsula.

"This is an historic win for Indigenous Australians; one that has been literally decades in the making," said

Australian Greens Indigenous Affairs spokesperson, Senator Rachel Siewert.

First lodged in March 1979, the Kenbi claim is the oldest outstanding claim under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act.

The agreement reached allows for 13,000 hectares to be converted to freehold and developed, while the

remaining 52,000 hectares is designated Aboriginal land for the Larrakia people.

"It is imperative that we as a nation grow and learn to achieve positive agreements between Governments and

the traditional owners of this land. Last December's report from the Native Title Working Group showed only

twelve out of hundreds of agreements in place across the country provided substantial benefits to Indigenous

Australians. I hope that when this agreement is finalised, that number will have increased," said Senator Siewert.

The Greens are calling on the Minister of Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin to act in response to the agreement

and quickly ensure Commonwealth approval.

"The ball is now in Minister Macklin's court to approve this agreement and hand title to the traditional owners."

"I congratulate the Larrakia traditional owners and the NLC for their strong stand in defence of their country, and

for keeping that fight alive for so long, to finally see a positive outcome," she concluded.
