COMBET CONGRATULATES DEFENCE 2020 STUDENTS

Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel Material and Science, today took part in the Defence 2020 National Participation Challenge at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.

“The Defence 2020 initiative brings together secondary school students from across Australia and aims to increase awareness and understanding of the role the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has within the Australian community,” Mr Combet said.

“The National Participation Challenge is the culmination of a series of 15 Regional Youth Challenges held throughout the country over recent months.

“The 23 students chosen to participate in this year’s National Challenge have again displayed remarkable drive and understanding of a range of complex Defence issues.

“The students participating toured various peacekeeping related sites and Defence establishments in Canberra before presenting role-plays to Government and senior ADF members.

“The program has given these students the opportunity to see firsthand what Peacekeeping and the ADF is all about, and I hope they will take this experience back to their schools and help promote greater understanding of Defence and the ADF among their peers, and within their communities.

“Defence 2020 is an education resource program designed to help students investigate the relevance of Defence issues to their own lives. It also seeks to raise awareness of the ADF among school-aged students and identify the organisation as one which shares the values of the Australian community.”

Students were chosen for the National Challenge on the basis of submissions they made relating to the ADF and its role in Peacekeeping operations since 1947.

“I congratulate all students who have participated in the Defence 2020 program in 2009, and especially recognise the efforts of the students chosen for the National Challenge. They have represented themselves and their schools with great distinction,” Mr Combet said.
