Joint Media Release

25/2009 9 July 2009

New recruitment advertising guidelines introduced by the Rudd Government will potentially save taxpayers millions of dollars each year.

The Australian Government’s Guidelines on Recruitment Advertising aim to improve efficiency in government expenditure for print media advertising that promotes specific and general job vacancies and employment opportunities that exist within all government departments and agencies subject to the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997.

"The Rudd Government remains committed to reducing waste and inefficiencies in government spending,” Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner, said.

"The introduction of these guidelines will bring greater consistency to government recruitment advertising and is expected to generate savings of approximately $7 million a year.”

The guidelines provide a consistent framework for agencies and govern a range of aspects related to recruitment advertising in print media including; the size of advertisements; the use of colour; the number of times a vacancy can be advertised; and the use of composite advertising.

Special Minister of State, Senator Joe Ludwig, said the guidelines will assist departments and agencies to achieve efficient and effective use of government resources.

"While agencies have their own cost saving measures in place, until now, no whole-of-government framework for recruitment advertising existed,” Senator Ludwig said.

"These new guidelines will assist departments and agencies to achieve efficient, effective and ethical use of government resources and value for money.”

The Guidelines on Recruitment Advertising came into effect on 1 July 2009 and are available online at www.finance.gov.au
