Margaret May MP Shadow Minister for Ageing

A Government submission to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission has recognised the extent of the crisis in the aged care sector.

“The Government has accepted that its own Award Modernisation changes would obliterate Australia’s fledgling aged care industry,” said Shadow Minister for Ageing, Margaret May.

“After recognising the dire state of aged care, Minister Elliot must now lobby Mr Rudd for the urgent reforms necessary to save the embattled sector.

“So far Minister Elliot has either been unwilling or simply too weak to do so.

“An industry on the brink of collapse is bad for staff, bad for providers and very bad for aged and frail Australians.

“Over 40% of aged care homes are currently operating in the red.

“Minister Elliot has been in the job for nearly 2 years now and has not lifted a finger to address the aged care crisis.

“If Minister Elliot remains too timid to fight Mr Rudd for the reforms necessary to protect aged and frail Australians she should stand down,” said Mrs May.
