THE HON DR SHARMAN STONE MP Federal Member for Murray Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship

Gillard has a change of heart

There were some very disappointed GAP year students in Murray last week when Minister for Education, Julia Gillard refused to meet with their delegation from across country Victoria.

Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray said Minister Gillard has now done a back flip deciding she really should meet the delegation and hear what they have to say.

“Following my numerous requests for meetings, my many letters describing the unjustness of the new system, rallies and continual media scrutiny, it is pleasing to hear Minister Gillard has changed her mind and decided to meet with the delegation,” Dr Stone said.

“This is good news for local students and their parents who will be able to tell Minister Gillard exactly how the changes will severely hinder their chances of a university education if they have to leave home.

“The delegation will represent the strong voice of the people in rural Victoria and will present a number of personal, but not unique cases to Ms Gillard, Minister for Education.

“We can only hope that upon hearing the facts from those directly effected she understands just how unfair these changes are to country families who can not afford the $15,000 -$20,000 needed to send their sons and daughters away from home to study. We need immediate action to reverse these changes,” Dr Stone said.

The delegation will meet with the Minister at 11.30am next Monday for 45 minutes. The delegation includes students, parents and professionals from regional areas throughout Victoria.

Due the last minute nature of the trip the locals participating will be driving to Canberra.
