Appointment of selection committee to Board of meat company

The Minister for Primary Industries and Energy and Deputy National Party leader, John Anderson, today appointed a six member selection committee to advise suitable candidates for the Board of the new producer owned meat company.

The new company will replace the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation and the Meat Research Corporation.

The Selection Committee comprises:

Mr Maurice Binstead, Committee Chair;

Mr John Wyld, President, Cattle Council of Australia;

Mr Jim Martin, President, Sheep Meat Council of Australia;

Mr Michael Norton, President, Meat Section, West Australian Farmers' Federation;

Mr Kevin Bowtel, beef and sheepmeat producer; and

Mr Rod Polkinghorne, cattle breeder and feedlot operator.

Mr Anderson said the new Board would need a range of expertise covering livestock production, processing and export, business and financial management, management of RD, legal and corporate governance,

international trade and marketing, and human resource issues.

"This range of expertise must be represented on the final Board," he said.

"The Government is committed to achieving the most effective boards possible and, among other things, this means harnessing a diverse range of skills, knowledge and experience.

"Accordingly, I am particularly keen to see women play an active role on this new Board."

It is expected the Committee will submit its nominations to the Minister before the end of June 1997.
