Action Plan for Batchelor Institute to secure future

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, today announced that the Australian and Northern Territory Governments have taken steps to secure the future of the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education in the Northern Territory.

The Institute has advised the Australian Government that its financial circumstances are critical and that the Institute will require the assistance of the Northern Territory and Federal Governments.

A priority of the Action Plan will be to ensure that students continue and complete their studies, and that the process will invigorate the Institute’s mission in Indigenous education, particularly in remote communities.

The Governing Council of the Institute has appointed an Acting Director to manage the Institute while new governance processes are put in place. Mr Brian McMaster from KordaMentha will take up this role from Monday for a period of 12 months.

The appointment will see the Acting Director work closely with both the Australian and Northern Territory governments and the Institute to secure the future of Batchelor Institute.

These steps will help ensure that Batchelor Institute will retain its important position in the Australian Indigenous community, supporting remote Indigenous students through a safe, cultural environment.

Both governments thanked Batchelor Institute Vice Chancellor Professor Jeannie Herbert for her contribution to Indigenous education in the Northern Territory.
