Latham compromised by James Hardie donations? 29th Jul 04

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today called on Mark Latham to commit to pursuing

James Hardie for the compensation for asbestos victims and their families and questioned the effect James Hardie's close financial connection with Labor has had on Mr Latham's unwillingness to speak out.

"It's not good enough for Mark Latham to say he would consider rejecting James Hardie donations in the future," Senator Nettle said. "The victims of James Hardie's greedy evasion of responsibility need action now.

"The failure of the Opposition to address the core question of compensation for the victims is unacceptable. People will rightly question what effect the ninety three tho usand dollars the ALP have received from James Hardie has had on Mr Latham's none response," Senator Nettle said.

"Mr Latham should instead put this dirty money into a trust for the victims and their families.

"The Labor party should join The Greens in committing to taking legislative action to track down James Hardie and ensure adequate compensation is available to the victims of the products James Hardie produced.

"The Greens are formulating private members' legislation to prevent this kind of bastardy occurring in the future."

Over $240,000 was donated by James Hardie in the past five years to Labor the Liberal, the Nationals and Democrats. The Greens do not take big business donations.
