Legislation to amend the Tariff Concession System has been introduced into Federal Parliament.

The amendment means that items imported to Australia under the TCS will enter at a concessional rate of duty of 3 per cent from 1 July 1996. There are also changes to the Policy By-Law System, as outlined on 8 May 1996.

“These changes are the result of consultation with industry groups, which were dissatisfied with changes originally proposed by the former Labor Government,” the Minister for Industry, Science and Tourism, Mr Moore, said today.

“The Labor proposal to totally abolish tariff concessions on business inputs was ill-considered, unworkable and would have created an administrative mess.

“The Government’s legislation is a pragmatic response to the concerns of industry.”
