New Regulations to implement a range of immigration policies and Budget measures will come into effect over the next few weeks the acting Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Senator Jim Short said today.

The majority of changes have been foreshadowed by the Government in announcing the migration program and the Budget.

The measures include:

• increased visa application and other fees to meet cost recovery commitments

• the new balance of family test for applicants for parent visas

• citizenship requirements for sponsors under the Preferential Families categories

• alignment of off-shore spouse and interdependency migration with similar on shore provisions, so that applicants initially receive a two year temporary visa

• addressing serial sponsorship concerns by limiting the number of times a person can sponsor on spouse, prospective spouse and interdependency grounds

• enabling humanitarian entrants to bring immediate family to Australia under the humanitarian program

Other measures include changes to allow visitors to undertake formal as well as non-formal studies of less than three months' duration, and the introduction of regulations to cover changes already announced for resident return visas.
