THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Minister for Defence Science and Personnel

Tuesday, 10 February 2009 017/2009

The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, today released the findings of the 2007 Defence Census.

“The Defence Census captures demographic information on permanent and active reserve Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and Defence public service employees,” Mr Snowdon said.

“While response to the Census is voluntary the data provides valuable information on the Defence workforce and Defence families that is not available from other sources.

“The data plays an important part in framing personnel policies and initiatives that make a difference to Defence people, particularly ADF families, and allows Defence to better target its programs, ensuring value for money.”

Mr Snowdon said that the Census, which has been conducted every four years since 1991, was distributed to over 90,000 ADF permanent, reserve and civilian employees across the Department of Defence in Australia and

“Special arrangements were put in place to ensure that our service men and women serving overseas on exchange or deployed on military operations were able to participate.

“I would also like to assure Defence people who completed the Census that their privacy and anonymity were ensured through the use of a company that is prominent in this field, Roy Morgan Research.”
