FEDERAL LABOR LEADER MARK LATHAM

Yesterday I said that the disunity and destabilisation within the Federal Labor Party must end.

Since the election we have disappointed the millions of Australians who voted Labor by concentrating on internal party mischief.

Our real job is to improve and advance Labor policy and to hold the Howard Government to account.

I welcome Senator Stephen Conroy’s public recognition of this reality today.

I welcome his statement of regret about the adverse publicity the Party has been receiving and his determination to discharge his special responsibilities as one of the four Parliamentary Leaders elected by Caucus.

As Leader I am determined to confront and deal with problems that divert the Party from its real task and purpose in serving the Australian people.

I am glad that this particular matter has now been resolved.
