Graham Edwards MP Federal Member for Cowan Parliamentary Secretary to the Shadow Minister for Defence

MEDIA RELEASE

HOWARD HAPPY TO COMMIT TROOPS TO WAR AND THEN STEAL THEIR RECOGNITION

The visit by the President of the United States to the Australian War Memorial to lay a wreath in honour of Australia’s fallen presented an ideal opportunity for the Howard Government to announce a campaign medal to recognise the bravery of Australian troops involved in the war against terror.

Instead the PM chose to bask in the glory that was hard earned by our troops and confiscate for himself the recognition that should have gone to them.

Graham Edwards, Parliamentary Secretary to the Shadow Minister for Defence called on the Howard Government to immediately strike a campaign medal and award it to those men and women of the Australian Defence Force whose courage, dedication and sacrifice are the real reasons for the high praise being heaped on Australia by foreign leaders.

British and American troops have had their service recognised by their respective governments. Recently the joint Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee of the Australian Parliament called on this government to do the same. The Government refused.

The Howard Government’s continued denial of a dedicated campaign medal for Australian troops reflects a true lack of respect and regard for the fighting men and women of Australia and the sacrifices made by them and their families.
