ACT HEROIN TRIAL

The Federal Minister for Human Services and Health, Carmen Lawrence, today welcomed the release of the report by the ACT Heroin Pilot Task Force.

"The Task Force has recommended stage 1 of the trial proceed, but it also identified considerable community polarisation about the trial," Dr Lawrence said.

"It is a proposal that has significant implications for the treatment programs and law enforcement efforts administered by all States and as such it is vital that any decision to proceed with the trial is supported by all Australian Governments.

"Consequently the Commonwealth will reserve its decision on the trial until the matter has been discussed by State and Federal Police and Health Ministers at the Ministerial Council on Drug Strategy.

"This is also the appropriate venue for discussion of other outstanding issues such as security, international implications and how attitudes to drug use might be affected by the proposed trial."
