PRESS RELEASE NO. 11

TREASURY MINUTE OF 6 OCTOBER 2005

Attached is the Treasury Minute of 6 October 2005 that was provided under FOI on Friday 16 December to Mr Michael McKinnon. The minute was referred to in reporting in today’s Australian newspaper.

The minute confirms that the Government’s workplace relations reforms will enhance employment and, over time, make a positive contribution to productivity.

The minute contains a typographical error on page 10, first dot point: ‘now’ should be ‘not’.

The report in today’s Australian claims that ‘Treasury documents’ obtained under FOI ‘confirm the department undertook various economic modelling to determine the effects of the reforms on employment’. This is false. The Treasury has never undertaken any modelling of the effects of the Government’s workplace relations reforms. Neither has it written a report on such modelling. This was made clear in the Treasury press release of 5 November and confirmed by the Treasurer in the Parliament on 7 November.
