Labor’s spin and smear on the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave scheme has been called ‘100% crap’ by Harvey Norman boss Gerry Harvey.

I mean, you know they’re spinning a story at the moment that if you put up the tax rate from 30 to 32 then Woolworths and Coles will put up their prices of groceries. That’s crap, it is 100% crap. It’s like saying that Harvey Norman will put up the price of our fridges or something like that. We won’t. The tax rate is the tax rate. We are trying to make a profit before tax that’s what we’re trying to make. Even if the tax rate went to 40% the price of your groceries won’t go up. - Gerry Harvey, Sky Business August 3 2010

When one of Australia’s biggest retailers calls the latest scare campaign a dud - Julia Gillard should sit up and listen.

Gerry Harvey’s comments come in the wake of the Managing Director of Coles saying:

"In overall terms I'm probably more concerned about the rising utility bills that are emerging through Australia, with electricity rates rising at almost 20 per cent...That's going to have a much more material impact in terms of our cost base than any sort of other changes to government policy either one way or the other." - Ian McLeod, Managing Director of Coles, ABC Sunday Profile July 31 2010

Australia’s premier retailers have spoken - this scare campaign is another Labor clunker.

Australia needs real action on cost of living pressures - instead of more Labor spin.
