The Brumbies sign on to save lives

Medicare Australia and Brumbies Rugby today launched a new partnership, encouraging more Australians to register for organ donation to save lives.

Brumbies players Nic Henderson, Matt Toomua and Huia Edmonds today marked Organ Donor Awareness Week 2009 (21 Feb - 28 Feb) by signing onto the Australian Organ Donor Register.

Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, said organ donation rates in Australia were among the lowest in the world.

“It’s so pleasing to see the Brumbies signing on to this important initiative, potentially saving the lives of many Australians,” Senator Ludwig said.

“The Rudd Government encourages more people to register for organ donation through the Australian Organ Donor Register.”

“The register, administered by Medicare Australia, is the only national register that provides a simple way for people to record their consent for organ and tissue donation.”

“According to Kidney Health Australia, there was a 30% increase in the number of organ donors in 2008.”

“While this is a significant jump, we can still do more to increase donation rates and help prevent unnecessary deaths.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing, Senator Jan McLucas, said during Organ Donor Awareness Week the community should think about organ and tissue donation and talk to their families about their wishes.

“Once you have registered it is extremely important that you talk to your family and friends about your decision, as they will be an important part of the donation process,” Senator McLucas said.

“Transplantation improves the lives of many Australians and the families who care for them.”

“There are currently over 1800 people in Australia on organ transplant waiting lists.”

“The more Australians sign onto the register, the greater the hope for those waiting and for those who need organ transplants in the future.”

Brumbies CEO, Andrew Fagan, said the CA Brumbies were happy to help Medicare Australia spread the message about the importance of signing onto the Australian Organ Donor Register.

“We hope that by signing onto the register today, we will encourage others to do the same,” Mr Fagan said.
