UNIQUE LANGUAGE LEARNING SYSTEM BRINGS THE CLASSROOM TO THE HOME

An English language distance learning programme launched today at the Language Expo in Brisbane by the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs·. Philip Ruddock, Is another example of the outreach services being provided to migrants in regional and rural areas.

"The Adult Migrant English Program's It's O ver to You package is a unique concept that enables English learners to overcome barriers imposed either by distance, family and work commitments or cultural factors," Mr Ruddock said.

"This is one of many initiatives being Introduced to ensure migrants wherever they are in Australia, have equal access to settlement services through measures such as national telephone Inquiry lines, the Internet and the sharing of resources with other Government agencies."

"It is part of the Government's commitment to providing services efficiently and effectively to its clients, especially in regional and rural areas."

"Distance learning is a most Important option offered by my Department's Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). By bringing the classroom to the home, it ensures that students who cannot come to formal AMEP classes don't miss out on this vital settlement program."

"It's Over to You exemplifies the AMEP's commitment to ensuring client accessibility and flexibility of service delivery,"

It's Over to You has been specifically designed for the distance learner. The course presents learners with authentic Australian English and helps them develop ways to cope with the often overwhelming reality of moving to a new country.

Students participate in activities which involve speaking, listening, reading and writing, using a series of workbooks, audio end video tapes, based thematically around Issues relevant to migrant settlement in Australia

The complete It's Over to You package was developed for the Department by the National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research. It comprises three stages, graded according to the user's knowledge of English. After assessment to determine their commencement level, AMEP eligible students who enrol in distance learning, receive course materials free of charge.

It's Over to You has been successfully introduced throughout Australia. In 1Θ65, 1617 migrants studie English in this way, representing about 4 7 pe· cent of the AMEP's students
