Labor’s Parliamentary Secretary for Education

The Senate today condemned the Howard Government for its latest attempt to cover up the fact that spending on government schools has declined by $87.5 million, Labor’s Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Senator Kim Carr said today.

A motion moved by Senator Kim Carr condemned Dr Kemp for refusing to update school funding projections in real dollar terms to the Senate Employment, Education and Training Committee.

“The refusal to cost funding in real dollars exposes as a lie the government’s claim that funding for schools is actually increasing,” Senator Carr said.

“They are refusing to provide an update on information on the spurious claim that it would reveal indexation assumptions.

“Dr Kemp has overruled an undertaking given by his junior minister at the Employment, Education and Training Legislation Committee’s hearing of 25 February 1998 to up-date the figures.

“This suggests that Dr Kemp’s decision was taken after the information request in an attempt to cover up the real situation.

“Release of the data would confirm that spending on education by the Commonwealth in real terms is actually falling and that the government have abrogated their responsibility to fund public education.

“This heavy handed attempt to avoid parliamentary scrutiny and stifle debate on education funding shows what lengths Dr Kemp will go to in order to cover up the facts.

“Such a display of contempt for the Senate committee system should not only be condemned by the Senate but by the wider community as a direct attack on open and accountable government,” said Senator Carr.
