CONTINUED FUNDING FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH SERVICES
Women's health has been highlighted in a joint Federal and ACT Government grant of more than $225,000 announced today.
Federal Minister for Health and Family Services, Michael Wooldridge and the ACT's Health and Community Services Minister, Kate Carnell said the money would fund the Women's Centre for Health Matters (formerly the Canberra Women's Health Centre).
Dr Wooldridge said the Centre focused on the priority health issues identified in the National Women's Health Policy.
"The Centre provides a wide range of services in such fields as healthy ageing, reproductive health, emotional and mental health, and violence against women," Dr Wooldridge said.
"It provides an important service with the Women's Health Matters Telephone Information Line.
"And the Centre will be employing a community development worker this year, to lobby, advocate and publicise women's health in the ACT," Dr Wooldridge said.
Mrs Carnell said $11,000 of the money would fund a project, called Health Matters for Women Over 60, focusing on building self-esteem and reinforcing a positive view of ageing.
"I applaud the decision to continue funding the Centre, because it will help to maintain our progress in improving women's health," Mrs Carnell said.
"Women are the major carers in our society, and their health is vital to the overall health of the nation."
