Thu, 20th August 2009 MODERN AWARDS ARE A TICKING TIME BOMB FOR SMALL BUSINESS

Mr Michael Keenan MP Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations

The latest moves by Julia Gillard to try and band-aid Labor’s botched award modernisation process is further evidence that jobs will be lost under the Governments new industrial laws.

Shadow Minister for Employment & Workplace Relations, Michael Keenan, said that while the Horticulture sector may have been granted a stay of execution, many other sectors are equally deserving of a fair go.

“The simple facts are that there will be thousands of Australians who will lose their jobs because of Julia Gillard’s so-called “modern awards”.

“The Government must recognise that if they don’t change course they will be condemning small businesses to closure and increasing prices for consumers.

“Modern awards a real threat to people who work in corner pharmacies, newsagents, aged care facilities and most family owned small businesses.

“The Minister’s latest move to spare the horticulture sector from massive job losses is evidence that her new laws are not working and this entire process must be suspended.

“Labor today shut down any discussion of this issue in the House of Representatives by using their numbers to silence any debate.
