Rich/Poor divide will be accelerated by IR laws - Brown

16th Nov 05

If CEO pay rises 16%, so should workers’ wages

The growth of the gap between the rich and poor will be accelerated by the Howard government's industrial relations laws, Green Senator Bob Brown said today.

"The Financial Review's revelation that CEO packages grew 16% last year - much faster than the minimum wage - also reveals an increasingly divided nation. The Prime Minister's 2001 election mantra, "for all of us", has proven hollow," Senator Brown said.

The Greens say extreme CEO packages should be capped.

"These IR laws would reflect Australia's credo of 'a fair go' if they included a relationship between all incomes, from the least paid workers to CEOs. If the average pay of CEOs goes up 16%, workers’ income should rise at least as much. Good profits come from good workers, not just the CEO's velvet chair," Senator Brown said.
