MARS TO BE EXTENDED FOR A YEAR

The Migration Agents Registration Scheme (MARS) will be extended for one year under legislation introduced today by the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Philip Ruddock

MARS was established in 1992 to regulate the conduct of migration agents. Initially the Scheme was to operate for three years, however in 1995 it was extended for another year.

"The Bill I have introduced today seeks to amend the Migration Act to enable the Scheme to operate for a further year, until 21 September 1997," Mr Ruddock said.

"The extension will allow the Government to review the scheme, taking into account the prospects for enhanced self-regulation by the migration advice industry."

Currently there are approximately 2,000 migration agents registered under MARS. Since the Scheme's inception, 27 agents have been prosecuted for various offences including giving advice when not registered, making false statements or forging documents.
