Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Maxine McKew, today joined her federal colleague Bendigo MP Steve Gibbons, councillors and officers from the Central Goldfields Shire to see the first demolition work on the $8 million Station Domain project at the historic Maryborough Railway Station.

"The Station Domain will capitalise on this landmark with its famously long platform, which once prompted Mark Twain to describe Maryborough as a station with a town attached," said Ms McKew.

"In the long run, this project will deliver the Maryborough community a much-needed community hub, improve the forecourt to the historic station and, very importantly, will support an estimated 57 jobs in its construction phase."

"The Station Domain will also provide more opportunities to attract new events and visitors to Maryborough in the future."

The Central Goldfields Shire Council is receiving federal funding of more than $3.3 million for the project from the $1 billion Community Infrastructure Program, part of the Rudd Government's Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan.

Bendigo MP Steve Gibbons welcomed the start of works and said he looked forward to seeing the changes on the site as they progress.

"Station Domain will bring an outdoor performance space, children's playground, landscaped community common, community bus terminal and a new access point to the railway station, all while staying true to Maryborough's heritage," said Mr Gibbons.

"It is projects like this that just wouldn't get out of the station without the catalyst of federal stimulus."

"Wherever I travel in regional Australia, I am delighted to see community-initiated, developed and owned infrastructure projects like this one giving Australia's regional economies a real boost," said Ms McKew.

The works will be completed to coincide with the return of a passenger train service from Maryborough to Melbourne next year.

"I look forward to arriving at Maryborough by train the next time I visit!" said Ms McKew.
