MINISTERS CONGRATULATE CUSTOMS AND AFP ON DRUG SEIZURE

The Minister for Customs and Consumer Affairs, Warren Truss, and the Minister for Justice, Senator Amanda Vanstone, have congratulated Customs and Federal Police in South Australia on the seizure of 6.4 kilograms o f amphetamines from two men at Adelaide Airport.

The Ministers said the haul was the largest drug seizure from passenger’s luggage at Adelaide Airport The drugs were discovered hidden in the luggage o f two men, who arrived on an international flight on March 3.

It is suspected that the amphetamine was destined for distribution in South Australia

Minister Truss said the seizure follows a number o f very successful customs seizures in South Australia during 1997 and is further evidence o f Customs vigilance.

“Customs staff in Adelaide are certainly doing an excellent job and I congratulate them on their success,” Mr Truss said.

“This should send a clear message to the criminal community that Australian authorities and the Federal Government are serious about halting this trafficking.”

Minister Vanstone said the Federal Police were working closely with Customs at ports around Australia with better intelligence and a higher level o f co-operation as part o f the fight against drug trafficking.

“There have now been a series o f successful seizures of drugs in South Australia, which have lead to charges being laid," Senator Vanstone said.
