Dutton And Thompson Looking For Good Employers

‘The Prime Minister’s 2005 Employer of the Year Awards for people with disabilities are now open for nominations’ the Minister for Workforce Participation, Peter Dutton, said today.

Launching the nomination process in Kingaroy with the Member for Blair, Cameron Thompson MP, Mr Dutton called on workers with disabilities to nominate those employers they see as doing a great job and deserving of recognition.

‘The Prime Minister’s Employer of the Year Awards recognise leadership and innovation in employing people with disabilities.

‘There are many employers out there who know that what counts in the workplace is a person’s ability, not their disability.

‘I am continually encouraged by those businesses and employers who take the employment of people with disabilities in their stride and show great flexibility and commitment to giving people a go’.

Speaking at a lunchtime forum for local employers hosted by South Burnett Job Match, a Disability Open Employment Service in Kingaroy, Mr Dutton particularly praised the work of small and medium business owners in creating job opportunities for people with disabilities.

‘To survive in business you need flexibility and an open mind. Good employers apply this same approach to the employment of people with disabilities.

‘Many employers find, that with the help of services such as South Burnett Job Match, that it is not as difficult to employ someone with a disability as they may think.

‘I would encourage anyone who knows of an employer, whether large or small, who deserves recognition to nominate them for an Award’ Mr Dutton said.

There are eight categories of Awards covering national, large, medium and small business as well as higher education and federal, state and local governments.

Nomination forms will be available from 2pm today at www.workplace.gov.au/eya or by calling 13 17 15.

Nominations close on Friday, 2 September 2005 with the state and territory and national winners to be announced later this year.
