Defence national work experience program and website launched

The Minister for Defence, the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon and the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon, today joined with students undertaking work experience at the Royal Military College, Duntroon to launch the Defence National Work Experience Program and website.

The program marks the start of a coordinated Defence-wide approach to providing work experience opportunities for students.

Work experience provides an opportunity for Defence to contribute to developing and educating young Australian students, along with generating interest in the wide variety of careers available in Defence.

“This national program offers young people the chance to experience what a career in Defence is like. It will also build upon and strengthen relationships between Defence and local communities,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“Students that participate in Defence work experience have the opportunity to develop new skills that will help them in the future to transition to the workforce or other endeavours”.

By the end of 2008, over 150 students will have undertaken practical work experience at Defence bases and establishments around Australia. This co-ordinated approach will allow for an expanded range of work experience placements to be offered in 2009.

Minister Snowdon added that research shows young people are seeking jobs that are interesting, varied and challenging, and that is what Defence can provide.

“A website is now available on the value and type of work experience placements Defence can offer in each State and Territory.

“I encourage students to speak with their schools and their parents about the opportunities to be involved in this exciting new initiative.”

The program builds upon and complements existing work experience opportunities and other programs Defence has made available to young Australians, such as the ADF Gap Year and the Australian Defence Force Cadets.

Further information on the program is available on a dedicated website at www.defence.gov.au/workexperience.
