Celebrating Democracy at Pearce schools

MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday, 12 October 2005

Lancelin Primary School, Swan View Primary School and The Silver Tree Steiner School in Parkerville are among 300 schools nationwide to receive Australian Government grants to help them showcase civics and citizenship education activities as part of Celebrating Democracy Week 2005.

Celebrating Democracy Week, which runs from 12 to 19 October, is a popular nationwide event that increases awareness of civics and citizenship education in Australian schools.

“All Australians can take pride in our democracy,” Member for Pearce Judi Moylan said.

“I am delighted that three schools have been recognised for their good work in civics and citizenship education and are receiving $550 between them.”

Lancelin Primary School received $200 for the celebration of the democratic process and involvement in team activities.

At Swan View Primary School they were awarded $150 for the presentation of citizenship medals for essays entitled “An Australian Citizen I Admire”.

Students at the Silver Tree Steiner School at Parkerville performed a narrative drama called Horatius at the Bridge. The school was awarded $200.

“Civics and citizenship education helps students to understand basic democratic values such as the rule of law, tolerance, acceptance of cultural diversity, respect for others, and freedom of speech and religion - values that underpin the Australian way of life,” Ms Moylan said.

The Howard Government is strongly committed to ensuring that when students leave school they have an understanding and appreciation of Australia’s system of government and civic life.

Since 1997, the Australian Government has provided $35 million in funding to help our schools with civics and citizenship education.
