Citizenship an Ice Dream For Aimee

29 July 2005

A dream will be fulfilled for 17 year-old Aimee Colson when she is granted Citizenship at a special ceremony tomorrow in Brisbane by the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, John Cobb.

The unique ceremony will be held at the Iceworld Olympic Rink in Boondall tomorrow morning.

Becoming a citizen means that Aimee will be able to follow her dream and compete with her team mates at the National Figure Skating Championships next month in Perth.

‘I am delighted that my first citizenship ceremony in Brisbane will not only welcome Aimee to the Australian family, but it will help her to achieve her goals of excellence,’ Mr Cobb said.

‘Aimee has a history of success with her skating, as she was a member of a Queensland team which won several national titles when she was a junior.

‘Her current team, Ice Viva, are the current Queensland Synchronised Ice Skating champions who will represent the State at the national titles.

‘I hope that Aimee’s story and today’s ceremony inspires some of the 63 000 New Zealand born, eligible non-citizens living in Queensland.

‘I would encourage all of the 900 000 people who are eligible Australia-wide to become citizens.

‘Citizenship is the unifying force in our culturally diverse society and I encourage all those who are eligible to take the final step and apply for Australian citizenship.

‘Australian Citizenship represents our shared values - acceptance, equality, freedom of speech and religion, the rule of law, Parliamentary democracy, our Constitution and English as the national language,’ Mr Cobb said.

‘Tomorrow’s ceremony also shows that the Government is very flexible in arranging citizenship ceremonies to help people achieve success in their chosen field.

‘I’m proud to confer citizenship on Aimee and wish her the best of luck at the National Figure Skating Championships next month,’ he said.
