GP Super Clinic for Mt Isa Media Statement - 21st November 2007

A Rudd Labor Government's investment of up to $2.5 million in a new GP Super Clinic in Mt Isa will provide infrastructure to boost health services and help take pressure off the Mt Isa Hospital.

Labor has chosen this area for a GP Super Clinic because it suffers from workforce shortages and low Medicare utilisation as a result.

Federal Labor's GP Super Clinics, by aiming to

co-locate specialists and allied health services with GPs, will enable patients to seamlessly access the range of health services they need to improve their health.

Once completed, the Mt Isa GP Super Clinic is expected to provide:

z Privately practising GP services including after hours services

z Chronic disease management services

z A range of allied health services such as physiotherapy, dieticians and

podiatry

If elected, Federal Labor will work in partnership with GPs, health professionals, the Queensland Government, and local government to finalise the suite of services to be delivered.

Federal Labor will work closely with local doctors and health professionals to ensure that the new Mt Isa GP Super Clinic complements and enhances existing health services.

Nicola Roxon said:

“The GP Super Clinic in Mt Isa is part of Labor’s $2.5 billion Health and Hospitals Reform Plan to improve health and hospital services and deliver better health outcomes to local communities around Australia.”
