STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER, THE HON J.W. HOWARD, MP, FROM VALETTA, MALTA, 27 SEPTEMBER 1979.

Last night I saw the Prime Minister of Malta, the Honourable

Dom Mintoff. Also present during the discussion was thfe-

Minister for Finance in the' Government of Malta, the

Honourable Joseph Cassar. " . '

My discussion with Mr Mintoff was frank and friendly.

We both agreed that relations between Malta and Australia

should be improved, particularly in the light of our long and

close association in the past. .

Our discussion dealt in general terms, with trade, commercial and immigration matters between our two countries. .

During our discussion it was agreed that the Minister for Labour

and Immigration in the Government of Malta, Miss Agatha Barbara, would visit Australia as a guest'of the Australian Government.

I also indicated to Mr Mintoff that Australia would undertake a review of her trade and commercial relations with Malta.

The discussion between the Prime Minister and myself is .the ·

most senior contact between our two- countries for some years.

I believe that the exchange of views which took place, and the

friendly atmosphere generated.during our discussion will improve

relations between our two Governments. .

2 .

The Australian Government desires better .relations«between

our two countries. This goal is also of particular interest

to the many thousands of Australians of Maltese origin«
