STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER, THE HON JOHN HOWARD, MP

APPOINTMENT OF GENERAL MANAGER OF THE COMMONWEALTH TRADING BANK OF AUSTRALIA.

The Treasurer, Mr Howard, announced today that, on the

recommendation of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation Board, His

Excellency the Governor-General in Council has appointed Mr

Stanley Patrick Kelly to succed Mr J.F. Lavan as General Manager

of the Commonwealth Trading Bank of Australia with effect from

1 Sep 1978. Mr Lavan proposes to retire on 31 Aug 1978.

Mr Howard said that Mr Kelly has had very wide banking

experience, having served in a range of senior executive

positions.

Mr Kelly has occupied the dual position of Chief Manager,

Victoria, Commonwealth Banking Corporation, and Assistant General

Manager, Commonwealth Trading Bank since 1972. Prior to that he

had served as Deputy Chief Manager, Staff; Chief Manager,

Accounting; Chief Manager, London; and Assistant General

Manager, Commonwealth Savings Bank.

Mr Kelly’s appointment would be for the period from 1 Sep 1978 to j

22 Mar 198*1, the day before his 65th birthday. .

In paying tribute to Mr Lavan for his outstanding service to the

Corporation Banks during a career which began over *17 years ago,

Mr Howard stated that Mr Lavan has made a significant

contribution to the development of the Corporation as a whole,

and particularly of the Commonwealth Trading Bank of which he has

served as the chief executive for the past 5 years.
