STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER, THE HON. JOHN HOWARD, MP .

APPOINTMENTS OF LIFE INSURANCE COMMISSIONER AND AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT ACTUARY ' '

The Treasurer, Mr. John Howard, today announced that His

Excellency the Governor-General in Council has been pleased to

appoint Mr. Galfrid Leslie Melville to the position of Life

Insurance Commissioner under the Life Insurance Act 19^5·

Mr. Melville replaces Mr. S.W. Caffin who retired late last year

after serving many years as Australian Government Actuary and

Life Insurance Commissioner. ,

Mr. Melville is a qualified actuary and has for many years been

closely involved in the life insurance industry both in „

Australia and overseas. .

He is expected to take up duty on 20 March 1978.

Mr. Howard said that, since commencement of the Life Insurance

Act in 1946, the occupant of the position of Australian

Government Actuary has also held the office of Life Insurance

Commissioner. The functions of each position had grown to the

extent that it was found appropriate, following Mr. Caffin1s -

retirement, to appoint two persons to the positions.

The Public Service Board has approved the appointment of

Mr. John Raymond Ford, ΟΒΕ» as Australian Government Actuary

Mr. Ford, a qualified actuary and resident of the UK, has

had extensive experience in actuarial- work overseas

particularly in the United Kingdom and Malaysia. He held

the positions of Insurance Commissioner and Government

Actuary in Malaysia for seven years and various positions

in the UK both in the government and private spheres.

He is expected to take up duty as Australian Government ' X. . -

Actuary in June 1978.
