STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER, THE HON JOHN HOWARD, MP

TAXATION - CHALLENGE TO WRAN

If Mr Wran is so sensitive about Government criticism of ALP tax '

policy, let him debate the issue with me. I would be happy to oblige.

The Labor Party has only itself to blame for attracting attention to.

this issue. \

For three years its spokesmen have promised.a capital gains and , wealth tax. . .

More importantly though, the.tax issue is crucial to the most important

question voters must resolve in the final days of this campaign. ·

Namely, where is the money coming from? .

Jf the Labor Party had not promised so much, things might be different.

The truth is that Mr Hayden has said he will implement his program

in the first three years.

The inescapable conclusion is that he will need the money from new taxation if dangerously high inflation is to be avoided. ■ >

The revenue sources he has nominated are almost totally suspect.
