PEKINGĀ· VISIT - DEPARTURE POSTPONED

(STATEMENT BY THE HON. DR. J.F. CAIRNS,

ACTING PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER FOR

OVERSEAS TRADE)

The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for

Overseas Trade, Dr. J.F. Cairns, said tonight that his

proposed visit to the People's Republic of China had

unfortunately to be postponed.

He said a misunderstanding had apparently arisen.

He stated that he had been informed that the Royal

Australian Air Force personnel manning the BAC-111 service

aircraft could not wear uniforms whilst on a visit to China.

Dr. Cairns said that he felt this misunderstanding should be

cleared up and had informed the Embassy of the People's

Republic of China accordingly.

Dr. Cairns said he felt it was very likely that the

problem which had arisen could soon be cleared up.
