ROYAL VISIT

. The Queen would not be leaving the United Kingdom on 6 March to resume her Australian tour as planned, the Prime Minister, Mr. Whitlam, said today.

An . announcement was made simultaneously from Buckingham Palace. A further announcement will be made as soon as possible. '

Mr. Whitlam said that Australians appreciated that the situation in the United Kingdom following the recent election prevented her leaving at present. .

It was still his hope that she would be able to resume her visit later this month.

BACKGROUND - NOT FOR ATTRIBUTION ‘

The Queen was to arrive in Darwin on 7 March to spend the night there in Britannia, to visit Perth on 8 March, Adelaide on 9 March, and Darwin on 10 March, and to leave by Britannia for Indonesia that night.

The Buckingham Palace statement will say that a further announcement will be made as soon as possible about The Queen's visit to Indonesia. It is at present scheduled for 15 to 22 March.

Planning is on the basis that The Queen will return to Australia after Indonesia and briefly visit Adelaide, Perth and Darwin. '
