STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER ASSISTING THE:' PRIME MINISTER, THE HON. LIONEL BOWEN, M.P. ■

CHILDREN'S COMMISSION FUNDS FOR HOLIDAY CARE PROGRAMS IN NEW SOUTH WALES

The Australian Government is .to provide $32,000

for some 30 holiday programs for approximately 4,500 school children

in New South Wales next month, through .the Children's

Commission. ; ; . -

Announcing this today, the Minister Assisting the

Prime Minister, Mr Bowen, said that a variety of programs

would be organised in different areas. The programs would

be open to all children, but priority would be given to

children of working parents, and of parents who could not

care for them during the school holidays.

The programs would provide creative and stimulating

activities for children of all ages, including pottery, art,

kite-making, excursions, and camps. Volunteer helpers from

the community including university students would help staff

the programs in a number of cases.

In Newcastle about 300 children a day would take .

part in a program sponsored by the Wickham Community Project

which would provide a variety of activities ranging from bus

trips to sailing, golf and dress-making. The program would

be based at the Wickham Public School..

• Programs would be run by the Y.M.C.A. from 12 centres

in the Wollongong area, providing for 30 children in each,

and in the inner Sydney suburbs of Redfern, Surrey Hills and

Waterloo, the Creative Leisure Movement would sponsor programs

which would include arts and crafts, films, jazz ballet,

ethnic dancing and bus trips.
