AUSTRALIAN CONTRIBUTION TO CHOGRM ACCOUNT

The M in i s t e r for Foreign A f f a i r s / the Hon Tony

Street MR/ commented today in Suva on the announcement by

the Prime M in i s t e r that A u s t r a l i a would con tribute

SA1.5 m i l l i o n to the new Special CHOGRM Account.

The Prime M in i s t e r told a press conference of

the decision following the f i n a l executive session of the

CHOGRM meeting t h is morning.

Mr Street said the new account w i l l be managed

by the development assistance arm of the Commonwealth

S e c r e t a t i a t - the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation

(CFTC). The funds w i l l be used to support p r a c t i c a l proposals

i d e n t i f i e d by the CHOGRM groups on Energy/ Trade and Industry

and by the new group on A g r i c u l t u r e . The Au stra li an i n i t i a t i v e

- ยท for a new study group on Maritime Issues/ which was endorsed

by Heads of Government/ w i l l also be funded from the new

account. ,

The c o n tr ib ut ion w i l l be drawn from an a l l o c a t i o n

for Commonwealth A c t i v i t i e s provided for in the 1982/83

Aid Budget.

The M in i s t e r said that A u s t r a l i a w i l l also continue

to provide d i r e c t support for CHOGRM a c t i v i t i e s as i t had

done in the p a s t .
