$50, 000 FOR TONGA RELIEF APPEAL

The Mi n i s t e r f o r Foreign A f f a i r s , the Hon. Tony St r e et MP, announced today a Government c o n t r i bu t i o n of $50,000 to the I n t e r n a t i o n a l Di sast er Emergencies Committee (IDEC) r e l i e f appeal f o r Tonga.

Mr St r e e t said t here was a const r uct i ve r ol e f o r community groups to play in d i s as t er r e l i e f and r e h a b i l i t a t i o n s i t u a t i o n s , and the Government wished to a c t i v e l y encourage t h e i r p a r t i c i p a t i o n . He said t h a t , wh i l s t t h e . Government had provided r e l i e f aid to Tonga amounting to some $1. 8 m i l l i o n and was c u r r e n t l y examining ways to assi st in the r e h a b i l i t a t i o n

phase, Tonga would r equi r e ext er nal assi stance f o r some time to come.

Mr St r e e t said t hat the i n i t i a l response of community groups and the p r i v a t e sect or to the Tonga d i s a s t e r had been generous and t hat he commended the I DEC appeal to those who wished to make donations to the r e h a b i l i t a t i o n e f f o r t s .
