TONGA DISASTER RELIEF

Cyclone Is a a c . Mr S tre e t said t h a t t h i s would b rin g the t o t a l

amount o f A u s tr a lia n emergency suppliesx the p ro v is io n o f which has been coordinated by the A u s tr a lia n Development Assistance Bureaux to around $750x000. There have a l s o been many o f f e r s of assistance

from non-government o rg a n isa tio n s and p r iv a t e firm sx he s a id .

The prompt d e liv e r y and e f f e c t i v e use of these supplies had been made po s sib le by the ready c o lla b o r a tio n and dedicated e f f o r t s of the Australian"Armed Forces who had once more demonstrated t h e i r c a p a c ity to respond to c i v i l emergency needs. d e v a s ta tio n caused by the cyclone in Tonga was such th a t the re c o n s tru c tio n phase would be of considerable magnitude and th a t the A u s tra lia n Government was c u r r e n t ly examining means by which i t could a s s is t in t h i s r e h a b i l i t a t i o n s tage.
