ADDITIONAL FOOD FOR AFGHAN REFUGEES

The M i n i s t e r f o r For ei gn A f f a i r s ' , the Hon. Tony

S t r e e t MR, announced today t h a t A u s t r a l i a w i l l pr o v i d e a

f u r t h e r 10, 000 tonnes of wheat f o r Afghan r ef ugees val ued

at $ 1 . 9 m i l l i o n i n c l u d i n g f r e i g h t .

Thi s w i l l be a d d i t i o n a l to the 15, 000 tonnes of

wheat f o r Afghan r ef ugees pr ovi ded through the UNHCR in the l a t t e r p a r t of 1981 and br i ngs the t o t a l val ue of

A u s t r a l i a ' s food a s s i s t a n c e f o r Afghan r ef ugees f o r 1981- 82

to more than $5 m i l l i o n . A u s t r a l i a had al so pr ovi ded

300 tonnes of hi gh p r o t e i n b i s c u i t s and 400 tonnes of sugar

to r ef ugees from A f g h a n i s t a n .

Mr S t r e e t sai d i t was i nt ended t h a t t h i s l a t e s t

g i f t of wheat would be t r a n s p o r t e d to r e f u g e e camps and

d i s t r i b u t e d by t he World Food Program (WFP) of the Uni t ed Nat i ons as p a r t of an ongoing p r o j e c t . The WFP would al so

moni t or t he use made of the food and e v a l u a t e the e f f e c t i v e n e s s

of the a i d .

Mr S t r e e t emphasised t h a t the p r o v i s i o n of more

wheat r e f l e c t e d the A u s t r a l i a n Government' s c o n t i n u i n g concern f o r the hardshi ps bei ng endured by more than 2 m i l l i o n Afghans who have f l e d to P aki st a n si nce the S o v i e t

Uni on' s i n v a s i o n of t h e i r homeland. I n t e r n a t i o n a l a s s i s t a n c e

has hel ped t o r e l i e v e t he economic burden pl aced on the

Government of P a k i s t a n by havi ng t o accommodate such l a r ge numbers of r e f u g e e s .
