PRIME MINISTER __________ ______________________ __

FOR MEDIA ' WEDNESDAY, 15 OCTOBER 1980

AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION OF BLIND CITIZENS WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY

It gives me great pleasure to again join with the Australian Federation of Blind Citizens in recognising the 15th October as White Cane , . Safety Day.

This day is not related.to fund raising activities, but rather aims to increase community interest and awareness of the meaning of the use of. the white cane. "

The white cane is a clear sign which reminds sighted Australians of the need to extend consideration and courtesy to persons who are blind. * .

Our blind citizens are entitled to the respect, and wholehearted support of all Australians. They deserve our encouragement to overcome their disability and lead normal lives as far as is possible. ,

In the coming year, there will be much effort by people to heighten the awareness of the Australian community to the needs and importance of all handicapped people. The Commonwealth Government will be fully . supporting the United Nations Declaration of 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons. The observance of the Year will be of

lasting significance for the handicapped and indeed the whole . community.

I am pleased to be able to again express my Support for White Cane Safety Day and extend my best wishes to the organisers for a successful and lasting result in establishing in all of us the proper recognition of the White Cane which it requires. .
