DROUGHT RELIEF

COMMONWEALTH ASSISTANCE TO QUEENSLAND

The Prime Minister, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, today stated that in addition to the measures of Commonwealth assistance to Queensland announced last week, the Commonwealth had today agreed to two further proposals made by the Queensland Government

to extend aid in drought stricken parts of that State.

Mr. Fraser said that the agreed measures were:

(.i) carry-on loans to small business in drought declared shires to $40,000 similar to those already available to primary producers

(ii) horse breeding properties where this is principle source of income, to be included in drought relief program. . .

Mr. Fraser went on to say that the Commonwealth stands ready under the Natural Disaster Assistance Arrangements to assist any State where drought was severely affecting the livelihood . of people on the land. The Commonwealth would act promptly on receipt of such requests for assistance as it had done to those made by the Queensland Government.
