PRIME MINISTER

FOR PRESS SATURDAY JULY 5 1930

CARNARVON FLOODS

The Prime Minister, the Rt.Hon. Malcolm Fraser, C .Η .., M.P.,

The West Australian Minister for the North West, the H on.

Ian Laurence, Senator Alan Rocher and Mr Mick Cotter, M.P.

today inspected flood damage.at Carnarvon.

Plantations on the McGlades Roads area where damage had been

particularly severe were the subject of special attention.

Farmers pointed out to Ministers that there was an urgent

need for soil rehabilitation work to be carried out within ·

the next few weeks to allow planting to proceed which would

greatly help their recovery. Shire and contract labour would

be needed which in the present conditions farmers.could not

afford to pay for.

Mr Fraser and Mr Laurence therefore agreed and announced

in Carnarvon that this work would, in the case of this

particular flood, be included as,one of the agreed measures .

under the natural disaster financial assistance arrangements..

This agreement will allow rehabilitation work to commence

immediately and will greatly assist farmers in their efforts

to get their plantations back .into production.
