Business acumen wins world trip for young Hobart engineer

Peter Ross, .23j a civil engineer of Sandy "Bay, and six other young Australians, leave on Saturday for an overseas study tour as a ' -reward for their unusual business acumen.

' Peter was a member of the team judged -best at Australia’s first ■ Adventure Workshop in Innovation and Entrepreneurship which was held in Armidale NSW in December 1979, concluding in Melbourne in February this year. _ -

The team's win was for their plan for commercial development of a solar water*heater which achieves maximum heating by following the sun's movements. The heater was designed and produced in . Mt Isa, Queensland, by Solar Tracking Systems Pty Ltd. -

The winning team competed against five others, each of six or seven young graduates of a wide variety of business and professional . - disciplines. ■ The Adventure Workshop was organised by the .

Department of Productivity as part of its Enterprise"Development . Program which includes projects- to encourage development of new firms based on Australian inventions and technological know-how.

Other members of the team are: Susan Vasilescu, computer programmer of Canberra; John Odgers, accountant; Mark Frecheville, businessman; James Sayers,- production engineer;. Peter Hart, electrical engineer . (all of Melbourne); and David Pettigrew, mechanial engineer of .

Brisbane. They will be accompanied by Norbert Nivervoll, of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, who acted as their tutor " during the workshop. - '

Private industry companies provided a panel of four leading businessmen to judge the proposals of each team and other companies contributed to the cost-of jthe prize winning, trip." . . . . - ' .

The team members will be formally farewelled at a cocktail party - in Melbourne on Friday. - - . .

They depart the. following day for San Francisco where their itinerary- . " includes a visit to nearby "Silicon Valley". Later on they will visit "Route 128" in Massachusetts, both" locations for-many new high- . technology _firms. - - - . - . " .

They will also visit Washington, New York and Philadelphia. '

In West Germany they will visit industries in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Hamburg before arriving in London on August 27. They are scheduled to leave London for Sydney on September 1. .
