No. Μ158/%κ Date 15 November- 1980 THE HON. TONY STREET, M.P.

* Utn m, f

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hori. Tony Street MP,

said today that he was appalled at reports that a Labor .

front-bencher had written to Buckingham Palace in connection

with the·appointment of Mr Vic Garland as Australia’s High

Commissioner in London. . . .

Mr Street said, "Senator Peter Walsh's action is outrageous".

"It has long been acknowledged that extensive political

experience is a significant asset in this position. Mr Garland's

political career, which involved him in a wide range of

Ministerial responsibilities, has eminently suited him to the

job.

"Former Parliamentarians from both sides of politics have filled

the position with distinction, as will Mr Garland."
