The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Peacock, today announded the following senior diplomatic appointments:

. Mr Edward Pocock, as Australia's Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. He will succeed Mr W.G.T. Miller, who has been Ambassador in Seoul since 1978. Mr Pocock, 46, has previously served in Paris, Saigon, Phnom Penh, Cairo and with Australia's United Nations Mission in New York. He is a graduate of the Universities of Adelaide and Oxford. He is married with two children.

. Dr Lloyd Thomson, as Australia's Ambassador to the Holy See. Dr Thomson, 60, Australia's Permanent Representative (Ambassador) to the United Nations Office in Geneva, succeeds Mr Brian Hill, who has retired.

Dr Thomson, who will be accredited to the Holy See from Geneva previously served as Ambassador to the Holy See in 1973-74. He is also a former Ambassador to the Netherlands and has served in Saigon, Geneva, The Hague and Jakarta. He is a graduate of the University

of Melbourne and the University of London. Dr Thomson is single.
